The fire of Beltane doesn't go out when May 1st ends.
It banks down. It settles into the land. It moves underground through root and mycelium and the slow, persistent heat of a season that has only just begun its fullest expression. And for seven weeks, from the sovereign crossing of Beltane through to the solar peak of Litha. It builds.
This is not the space between two celebrations. It is the living body of the season itself.
Most modern approaches to the Wheel treat each Sabbat as a discrete event, a ritual performed, a season acknowledged and then set aside until the next spoke arrives. But the witch who walks the full Wheel with genuine attention knows that the real work happens in the between. In the ordinary days. In the way the light changes week by week. In the land pressing outward with an urgency that doesn't pause because the calendar moved on.
Seven weeks. One current. Two fires at either end.
This is what lives between them.
THE LAND BETWEEN THE FIRES
Step outside.
The land between Beltane & Litha is doing something specific and it's doing it with force. This is not the tentative green of Imbolc's first stirring or the balanced emergence of Ostara. This is full, committed, unstoppable growth, the land having crossed its own threshold at Beltane & now moving with the confidence of something that knows where it is going.The botanicals of this season reflect that perfectly.
St. John's Wort begins to bud in this window, reaching its flowering peak at Midsummer. Its association with solar energy & protective magick is documented across European folk practice, gathered specifically in the weeks approaching the Solstice when its potency was understood to be building toward its peak.
Elderflower reaches full bloom in this window across the US & Europe. The Elder carries one of the oldest & most complex relationships with witchcraft and folk magick in documented record. associated with protection, the fae & the boundary between the seen and unseen world, with references traceable back to the 5th century.
Mugwort is fully alive & growing strong during this time, its association with dreaming, divination & the witch's sight deeply embedded in European folk practice across multiple traditions.
Vervain, one of the most consistently documented herbs of the craft across Celtic, Roman and later folk traditions, is actively growing & approaching its pre flowering peak during this window.
The witch who pays attention to her botanical correspondences during these seven weeks is not waiting for Litha. She is working the current as it builds, gathering, tending, observing & letting the living green world inform her practice in ways that no calendar date can replicate.
THE WITCH'S WORK IN THE BETWEEN
This is where most seasonal practice loses steam.Â
The ritual is performed. The candles are burned. The intention is set. And then, nothing. We're busy. Life is happening all around us. We, as witches, return to ordinary life & wait for the next Sabbat to arrive.
But the current doesn't pause. The fire is still building. And the witch who understands this works the between differently.
Here is what the seven weeks between Beltane & Litha actually ask of the practitioner:
Tending what was crossed into. Beltane asked you to cross the threshold. To release what the fire couldn't carry. To release what the fire couldn't carry. To emerge changed by what the crossing revealed. The weeks that follow ask you to tend what emerged. Not to revisit, that's done, but to pay attention to what is actually growing in the space the fire cleared. What intentions set at Beltane are showing first shoots? What released patterns are trying to reassert themselves? The tending is the work.
Working with the building solar current. Across ancient seasonal traditions, the sun’s energy during this window was understood as accumulating strength day by day, building toward the Solstice rather than arriving there all at once., from Egyptian solar observation through Celtic, Slavic & Norse/Germanic practice to the cunning folk of the 16th century, the sun's energy in this window was understood as accumulating power. Each day carrying more light than the last. The solar current building toward its peak at the Solstice rather than simply arriving there. Spellwork oriented toward growth, expansion, visibility & strengthening moves with this current rather than against it.
Deepening relationship with the unseen. Many believe the fae & nature spirits are active throughout this entire window, not only at the threshold nights of Beltane Eve & Midsummer's Eve but in the ordinary days between. The practice of leaving offerings at liminal places, thresholds, wells, elder trees, hawthorn, during the growing season is documented across Slavic, Norse/Germanic, Gaelic & Brythonic Celtic tradition.For those who work with the living spirit world, presence & attention are the practice itself.
Allowing the working to move through ordinary life. This is perhaps the least glamorous & most important piece. The seven weeks between Beltane and Litha are not seven weeks of ritual. They are seven weeks of living in alignment with a current that is moving whether you acknowledge it or not. The morning cup of tea made with herbs of the season. The barefoot walk that is also a working. The moment of standing in the strengthening sun & feeling it press close. These are not substitutes for ritual. They are the continuous thread that makes the Litha ritual land with genuine power rather than as an isolated event.
THE SECOND MOON
In this particular year, the seven week current carries an additional layer.
On May 31st, a second full moon rises within the same calendar month, an anomaly in the solar calendar that occurs roughly every two to three years when the lunar cycle & the calendar month fall out of alignment. The energetic reality of a second full moon occurring within the heart of this seven week current is worth acknowledging for what it actually is, an unexpected lunar fullness arriving within a season that is primarily solar in character.
The 13 moon year was understood in many pre Christian traditions as the anomalous year, the year when the lunar calendar pressed against the boundaries of the solar one and created something outside the expected pattern. The second full moon of May carries that same quality. It doesn't fit the pattern. And in the craft, what doesn't fit the pattern often carries the most potent charge.
A full moon in the space between Beltane and Litha creates a genuine counterpoint, the moon's reflective, intuitive, deep water energy moving through the same window as the sun's building, expansive, outward fire. For the witch working this season with intention, the May 31st full moon is a natural pause point within the forward momentum of the current. A moment to turn inward briefly. To let the lunar light illuminate what has grown since Beltane before the solar peak of Litha claims it fully.

Here is what seven weeks of intentional practice actually does to the Litha working.
The witch who arrives at the Summer Solstice having walked the full current, having tended what emerged from Beltane's fire, having worked with the building solar energy week by week, having paid attention to the natural flow of growth & the unseen and the ordinary magick of the between, arrives at the peak already standing in her own summer. The Litha ritual doesn't need to do the work of getting you there. You're already there. The working can go deeper because the preparation has been genuine.
The seven weeks are the preparation. The Litha working is the claiming.

Between Beltane & Litha, the current does not stand still.
It gathers.
The fire first kindled at Beltane begins to move through the body, through the land, through the ordinary shape of daily life. What was awakened in the crossing now asks to be lived, tended, listened to, & carried toward the height of the sun.
This seven knot Witch’s Ladder is worked slowly across the turning weeks between the fire of Beltane & the solar crown of Litha. One knot is tied each week, allowing the working to unfold in rhythm with the living season itself.
Use a length of natural cord or thread in a color that calls to you through the growing season, green for the living land, gold for solar vitality, amber for ripening abundance, or red for the fire current itself. Leave enough space between each knot for the working to breathe & unfold naturally over time.
This is not a ladder of hurried manifestation.
It is a weaving of relationship between yourself, the season, & the living current moving beneath both.

This final knot does not ask for becoming. It recognizes what has already been claimed. This is a knot of sovereign claiming.
