Ostara & the Astrological New Year: Working the First Flame of Aries

Ostara and the Astrological New Year

Working the First Flame of Aries

The Wheel turned at Ostara & the energy has shifted with force.

The Sun entered Aries on March 20th, marking the beginning of the astrological new year.

This is a point of balance, where light & dark stand equal and the land begins to stir. It is also a point of ignition, where energy begins to move forward & take direction.

Ostara holds the balance. Aries carries the spark.

Together, they've opened the gateway to a new cycle. This is where the year begins to move in your hands.

 The Energy of This Turning

There is a brightness to this time of year. You can feel it in the lengthening days, in the way the air shifts, in the quiet sense that something is ready to begin.

This is where you turn your attention outward.

The work you begin here carries forward. It gathers strength as the Wheel turns, meeting each Sabbat in its own time and finding its way into form through your practice.

This is where direction is set. The current follows your focus, and what is worked begins to take form.

There is momentum here.

The Witch’s Place in the Turning

As witches, we work with what is present.

Ostara offers balance.
Aries brings the first flame.

You stand between them, holding both.

This is where you decide what you are ready to begin, what you're willing to tend & what you will carry forward as the Wheel continues to turn.

Your work shapes the path ahead

What You Will Need

A small space on your altar or a designated area

Three to seven objects, symbols, or written words
Choose pieces that represent direction, not desire

Some items to choose from:

 Objects that hold energy

  • a small charm or talisman
  • a key for opening or access
  • a coin for exchange or flow
  • a feather for movement or communication
  • a small vessel, vial, or shell

 Natural elements

  • dried herbs aligned with your working
  • a small branch, thorn, or root
  • flower petals or seeds
  • a piece of bark or earth
  • Stones

Choose stones that feel aligned with action, clarity, or movement, such as:

  • Carnelian for momentum and forward motion
  • Sunstone for confidence and outward expression
  • Clear Quartz for amplification and direction
  • Tiger’s Eye for steady movement and grounded action

 Written or inscribed pieces

  • a word that names the path you are stepping into
  • a short phrase that directs your working
  • a sigil you have created
  • a drawn symbol that holds meaning for you

Each piece should feel like something you are willing to engage with, not just something you admire.

 Anchor Stone

Choose one stone to serve as the anchor of the working.

This is the piece that holds the path in place and grounds the current you are setting.

Best Options:

  • Carnelian for action, courage, and sustained movement
  • Tiger’s Eye for steady progress and clear direction
  • Garnet for commitment and follow-through
  • Smoky Quartz for grounding the work into the physical

If none of these are available, choose a stone that feels solid and steady in your hand. The anchor is less about perfection and more about relationship.

The Working

Light your candle.

Sit with the energy of the turning & the energy of new beginnings. Feel where it is already moving in you. Not what you think should happen, but what is already pressing forward.

Begin placing your pieces one at a time.

Each one is set with purpose.

As you place the first, say,

This is where the path opens.

With the next:

This is where the work takes hold.

Continue in this way, allowing each piece to mark a direction you are choosing to move toward.

When all pieces are placed, take your anchor stone in your hand.

Hold it over your working & recite,

This path is set, the work begun,
By my hand, it moves as one.
Forward carried, line by line,
The work takes form by my will and time.

And So It Is.

Place the stone at the center or at the beginning of your layout.

This is not a fixed.

You may return to this working as often as needed.

You may decide to,

  • shift pieces as the path becomes clearer
  • add new markers as new directions emerge
  • remove what no longer holds or has already come into form

The timing of this working follows you & your practice, not a set date.

You will feel when something has taken hold.
You will know when a piece has completed its place within the working.

You have not made a vision. You've set a path. And from here, the work responds.

This is the beginning of a working that will move with you.

You may return to it. You may add to it as the Wheel turns & the seasons shift. What you set into motion here carries forward, gathering strength, meeting each Sabbat in its own time.

As the days lengthen & the warmth of Beltane begins to rise, you may start to see where this first flame has taken hold.

What you have set in motion now carries forward.

From my hands to yours-
