The Night Three Thresholds Open 🔥 A Deeper Look at Beltane Eve & the Sabbat

OPENING

Tonight, the (nearly) Scorpio Full Moon begins it's rise over Beltane Eve, pulling the tides, the blood & the deep waters of what we have long kept buried. She is not subtle company for a fire festival. But then again, Beltane has never really been about subtlety.

I can feel the shift already, the scent of Hawthorn on the air, the crackle of a fire that hasn't been lit yet. It's a time of sovereign union, where we marry our intentions to the wild, untamed growth of the season. Not the tamed garden. The forest at the edge of it. The place where the veil thins not with the solemnity of Samhain's ancestral reckoning, but with hunger. The living world pressing hard against the skin of what's possible.

While the world sees Maypoles & flower crowns, those of us who have walked this path for a while know the weight underneath this moment. Beltane isn't just a celebration. It is a reckoning. A reclaiming. And tonight, Beltane Eve, is when the real work begins.

WHAT THE OLD RECORDS ACTUALLY SAY

Most modern Beltane content will give you the surface layer, fertility, union, the sacred marriage of the God & Goddess, flowers in your hair. And those things are real and magickal in their own rite. But they are the bloom on top of something far older & more demanding.

One of the earliest written references to Beltane ritual comes from Sanas Cormaic,  Cormac's Glossary, compiled in Ireland in the 9th to 10th century. It describes the lighting of two great fires with incantations & the driving of animals between them to guard against sickness. Scholars are clear on this point, this was not symbolic theater. It was presented as protective technology. A practical application of fire magick at a critical seasonal threshold.

But what those records also preserve & what is far more potent for us as practitioners, is what happened to the hearth fires.

On Beltane Eve, every hearth fire in the community was extinguished. Every one. The households went dark together. No ember was kept. No coal carried forward. Alexander Carmichael's Carmina Gadelica, that extraordinary collection of Scottish Gaelic prayers, charms & ritual observations, records that on May Day, all the fires of the district were extinguished and tein eigin, the 'need fire', was produced on the knoll. This new fire was kindled from friction alone, drawn from the meeting of wood against wood. And then, when the sacred flame was established on the hill, each household carried it home to rekindle their own hearth.

Every home. Every family's warmth & light. Deliberately surrendered to the dark, so that what was reborn from the sacred flame was new. Not a continuation. Not a revision. A complete reclaiming of fire itself.

That is not a small act. That is an entire community agreeing, collectively, to release the fire they had tended all winter. Every coal, every ember, every familiar flame, back into the dark. So that what rose from the sacred hill that night carried something older & wilder than anything a hearthstone could hold.

THE WITCH ON THE BROCKEN

And across the North Sea, the Germanic world was marking this same night, but with a very different cast of characters.

Walpurgisnacht. Hexennacht. The Night of Witches. Observed on the eve of May 1st, this was the night when witches were said to gather on the Brocken, the highest peak of the Harz Mountains in northern Germany, to hold their Sabbath before spring fully arrived. Fires were lit across the hillsides to ward off malevolent spirits & purify the land before the summer season took hold.

Here is what those who feared the witches never understood, the witches were the fire. They were the ones who moved through the threshold first, who sat at the peak of the highest hill in the dark, who inhabited the chaos between the old season & the new. So that what came after could be consecrated.

Across two entirely different cultural traditions, Celtic & Germanic, the same essential truth emerges, this night requires someone willing to move through the threshold before it's safe. Before it's light. Before it is known.

That has always been the witch's role.

WHY TONIGHT IS WHEN WE BEGIN THE WORK. THE THREE THRESHOLDS

Here is what I want you to really sit with tonight.

The word liminal comes from the Latin limen, threshold. And Beltane Eve isn't just one threshold. It's three of them & they're all cracking open at the same time.

The land itself is crossing over. This is the exact hinge point where the fertile half of the year takes hold. Our ancestors felt this not as a date on a calendar but as a physical shift, a change in the very pressure of the world around them. The old sources are consistent on this. Beltane was never a quiet observance. It was a moment when natural forces intensified & the membrane between what is seen and what is unseen became genuinely permeable.

The veil is moving too. Like Samhain's ancestral reckoning on the opposite spoke of the Wheel, tonight the boundary between this world & the Otherworld grows thin & restless. What resides on the other side isn't sleeping. It's watching to see who shows up at the edge. The Scottish & Irish folk traditions are rich with records of offerings left at sacred wells, thresholds & under Hawthorn trees on this night  out of active negotiation with what moved freely in the dark.

And then there is the third threshold, the one inside you. This is the one that matters most for your working. Liminal energy is pure potential before it has a name. It is the breath held between the question and the answer. Between who you have been and who you are becoming. Tonight, those two versions of you are standing in the same doorway & that doorway is open.

A spell worked at dawn, on Beltane, at the threshold of your own home, carries a compounded force that ordinary nights simply cannot hold. Three thresholds. One moment. This is why the Beltane Eve fires burned until sunrise. This is why our ancestors didn't sleep.

You are not the bystander on the hillside, watching the flames from a careful distance, warming your hands on someone else's courage. You are the witch who carries the torch down from the hill. You are the one who walks through first, who feels the heat on both sides, so that what follows is already blessed by your passage.

What crosses first names what follows. That has always been the witch's role. It still is.

THE SHADOW ZENITH

There is a concept I come back to every Beltane, and it's this, the Shadow Zenith.

Beltane is the moment of greatest external blooming, the land is at its most visually alive, the light is expanding, the world is loud with growth. And yet, underneath all of that abundant surface, something is being asked of us that has nothing to do with flowers.

Advanced practice isn't always about the light. Sometimes the fire of Beltane burns away what we thought we were, to make room for what we are becoming. The twin fires of the old ritual were not only for the animals. They were for the people too. Those who walked between them were not celebrating. They were submitting to ordeal. They were saying, I am willing to be tested by what I claim to be stepping into.

That is the question Beltane asks each of us, underneath all the beauty of it. Not what do you want to call in? but what are you actually willing to become? Not what intentions will you set? but what version of yourself are you finally ready to release into the dark, so something with more life force can take its place?

The corridor of fire is open. You only have to be willing to walk through it.

A JOURNALING PRACTICE FOR THE THRESHOLD

Before you sleep tonight or better yet, before the sun rises tomorrow, find a quiet space, light a single candle & sit at the threshold of a doorway if you can. Let yourself be literally between two spaces.

Then take your journal and sit with these questions. Not all of them. The ones that pull at something.

What fire have I been tending all winter that no longer belongs to me, that I am ready to release back to the dark so something new can be kindled in its place?

Where in my practice have I been the bystander, warming myself on someone else's courage, someone else's tradition, someone else's certainty, rather than carrying my own torch?

The witch on the Brocken didn't wait for permission or safety before she climbed the hill. What have I been waiting for permission to become?

If the version of me that crosses this threshold is different from the one who approached it, what does she know that I am only beginning to admit?

The Dew of May will gather before sunrise. If you can, go outside just before or after dawn & let it touch your hands. What you carry forward from that moment is already blessed by the crossing.

Blessed Beltane. May your fire burn exactly as wild as it needs to

A Note for Ritual Box Subscribers

Your Beltane Ritual Box is designed to work across this entire threshold window. Tonight's Liminal Space soak is crafted specifically for Beltane Eve. The full Beltane ritual follows on May 1st. And if your box arrives on May 2nd, or beyond, know that the magick is not diminished by the postal service. The true astronomical cross quarter, when the sun reaches 15 degrees Taurus, falls on May 5th this year. That is how the land itself marks the turning. Work it when it arrives. Work it when it calls to you. The threshold doesn't close at midnight & it certainly doesn't answer to a tracking number.
