Winter is not a season of striving.
It is a season of keeping the fire.
As the Wheel turns through the dark months, intention work asks for a different shape. Not vision boards filled with demands & declarations, but something closer to the hearth. Something tended slowly. Being allowed to rest, inwardly & waiting.
The Hearth Board Working is a winter practice for holding what matters without forcing its arrival. It is a place to gather embers rather than chase outcomes.
This working may be done at any point during winter, and returned to again and again until the light fully returns.
What the Hearth Board Is
A Hearth Board is a small, intentional space where you place what you are carrying through winter. It can be a physical board, a page in your grimoire, a section of your altar, or even a shallow box or tray.
It is not about calling things in.
It is about tending what is already present.
Think of it as the hearth where intention is watched over until the light stirs.
What You Will Need
Use what you already have. This working is meant to be accessible and personal.
• A small board, page, tray, or dedicated space
• A candle, chosen for warmth it carries
• Paper, scraps, or parchment for writing
• Optional winter correspondences, bay leaf, rosemary, cinnamon bark, pine needle, dried orange peel, stone, or bone
• A quiet moment
Nothing needs to be perfect. The hearth is not decorative, it is lived with.
Preparing the Space
Light your candle and allow yourself to focus. This is not a circle casting or formal opening. Simply acknowledge where you are.
Place your hands near the flame or over your heart and take a breath that feels unforced.
Let the outside world stay outside for a moment.
The Working
On your paper, write three things. These are not goals or outcomes. They are what you are tending.
You may choose from the prompts below, or let your own words come through.
• Something you are tending quietly
• Something that needs gentler care
• Something you are protecting through winter
Write without polishing the language. Simple words carry the most warmth.
Fold or place each piece onto your Hearth Board. If you are using herbs or objects, place them beside the words. Allow the arrangement to feel natural rather than symbolic.
Hold your hands over the board & recite,
What is kept warm survives the winter.
What is tended in darkness learns how to grow.
Sit with the flame for a few moments. There is nothing else to do.
How to Work With the Hearth Board
Return to it when you feel drawn.
You may add to it.
You may remove something when it no longer needs holding.
You may leave it exactly as it is until Imbolc or beyond.
The Hearth Board is not active magick. It is keeping magick.
Closing the Working
When you are ready, extinguish the candle by snuffing.
There is no formal closing. The work continues quietly.
A Final Note
Winter teaches us that not everything needs to be summoned. Some things only need shelter.
If you return to this working weeks from now & feel differently, that is part of its wisdom. The hearth adapts. So do we.
The Wheel is continually turning.
Keep the fire.
